WV STATEWIRECHARLESTON — Gov. Patrick Morrisey is sharing developments that artificial intelligence company Anthropic has agreed to spend approximately $45 billion over six years for computing capacity at Nscale’s flagship West Virginia data center campus.
According to Bloomberg, the reported agreement would involve about 460 megawatts of computing capacity, with Nscale using NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin technology to support Anthropic’s growing AI computing needs.
Morrisey said the agreement demonstrates West Virginia’s ability to compete for major investments in the artificial intelligence industry.
“The reported $45 billion agreement for computing capacity at Nscale’s West Virginia campus is an extraordinary vote of confidence in our state and the strategy we put in place,” Morrisey expressed in a statement released by the Governor’s Office.
The governor has supported legislation intended to provide regulatory and siting certainty for large-scale developments while preventing infrastructure costs from being shifted to existing residential and business ratepayers. The law also directs 50% of revenue generated through the state’s microgrid framework toward reducing and eventually eliminating the state income tax, with additional funds going to host counties, communities and infrastructure projects.
“West Virginia has powered America for generations, and now we have an opportunity to power the AI revolution,” Morrisey said. “We are building an ecosystem where energy production, artificial intelligence, advanced computing and manufacturing can grow together.”
Morrisey said the state’s strategy extends beyond individual data center projects and includes his “50 by 50” energy strategy, which seeks to expand West Virginia’s power generation capacity to 50 gigawatts by 2050.
