WV STATEWIRECHARLESTON — West Virginia reported declines in violent crime, property crime and drug overdose deaths in 2025, according to figures released by Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s office on Tuesday.
“Nothing matters more to me than you and your family’s safety,” Morrisey said, according to a statement released by the governor’s office.
Reported violent crime fell 5.6% statewide, from 4,310 offenses to 4,070, leaving West Virginia’s rate 31% below the national average. Property crime dropped 13.5%, from 19,289 offenses to 16,685, while drug overdose deaths declined 12%, a reduction of 99 deaths. Morrisey’s administration has also pursued tougher drug laws, including Lauren’s Law, signed in April 2025, which established mandatory minimum sentences for transporting fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine into the state.
Law enforcement agencies conducted several major operations targeting drug trafficking and violent crime. Authorities seized 54 pounds of suspected fentanyl, 70 pounds of crystal methamphetamine and 15 firearms in Mercer County, while another operation spanning three counties resulted in the seizure of 12 pounds of fentanyl and about $300,000 in narcotics.
“Our troopers, deputies, and officers are making it clear that crime has no safe haven in our state,” Morrisey said.
Other efforts resulted in dozens of arrests, including 34 people wanted in the Eastern Panhandle and 72 violent fugitives and noncompliant sex offenders in the Kanawha Valley region. The West Virginia First Foundation also committed nearly $40 million to 171 community projects through the end of 2025.
