CHARLESTON — The West Virginia Senate Committee on the Judiciary will host a special listening session on child welfare and Child Protective Services on Monday, February 23.

The session, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Senate Judiciary Committee Room, 208W, at the State Capitol, is being led by Chairman Sen. Tom Willis (R-Berkeley), ahead of the committee’s consideration of legislation aimed at reforming the state’s foster care and child welfare systems.

“As Judiciary Chair, I have traveled all over and want West Virginia to know — we have heard your voices on concerns over Child Protective Services and the system as a whole,” Willis said in a statement. “Our children are our most precious resource and finding a solution to these problems is my number one priority. My hope is that West Virginians can speak up and know that we’re listening.”

Members of the public are invited to attend and speak. Those wishing to speak in-person must register between 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Speaking times will be assigned based on the number of participants, and written statements will also be accepted if all speaking slots are filled.

The session will be live-streamed, and members of the media are encouraged to attend in person.
